Fire detection & alarm system inspections should be carried out monthly, 6 monthly, yearly and 5 yearly. Your fire alarm should be tested every month and more advanced inspections on a fire detection system should be carried out at least once a year in order to meet the minimum standard for fire suppression systems required under AS1851.
A fire detection system is not to be confused with conventional smoke alarms. A smoke alarm is a self-contained device which has built-in-fire detection components, including an alarm sounder. A fire detection and alarm system on the other hand, is more sophisticated and made up of separate components.
Fire detection devices are installed throughout the workplace in various protected areas (typically in the form of smoke or heat detectors), which relay information back to the FIP (Fire Indicator Panel). In the event of a fire, warning devices will alert the occupants in the protected areas prompting immediate evacuation procedures.
There are other outputs which can be triggered by the Fire Indicator Panel, including:
- Direct and immediate contact with the fire brigade
- Activation or deactivation of essential air handling systems
- Fire door release
- Emergency Warning and Intercommunication System panel (EWIS)
Regularly inspections and maintenance of your fire detection system is critically important, but even more so when you have additional outputs set up as mentioned above. There can be no room for error. That’s why we have individual, accredited CFSP, fire safety assessors dedicated to your property to make sure we know and manage your property as if it’s our own.
